Founded with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902, the Navy League of the United States quickly became a powerful voice advocating a strong maritime component to the national defense. Capt. Richard L. Wright, USN (Ret.), is a defense consultant and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. His assignments included extensive sea duty in surface combatants and aircraft carriers, as well as command of a frigate, a destroyer, and a destroyer squadron. He also served as a special assistant for Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, Jr., in 1983–86. He lives near Washington, D.C. .
